Abstract

The efficiency of an electric motor will always be the primarily concern in the machine design. It will moreover be the target during the improvement of the electric motor construction. One of the electric motors that is currently undergoing rapid development is interior permanent magnets synchronous motors, IPMSMs. In IPMSMs, permanent magnets are embedded in the rotor core. With this construction, IPMSMs have a rigid body, therefore it can be applied at medium to very high speeds. Other advantages of the machine is that it allows to achieve high efficiency, and high power density. Common designs found in IPMSMs are V-Shape, U-Shape, and Flat-shape. These designs are categorized based on the shape of the magnet slots used in the rotor. The efficiency of the three designs is quite capable compared to its predecessor model, namely SPMSMs. This efficiency is related with the flux distribution profile. In this paper, the torque profile and air gap flux distribution of the motors are compared using FEA simulations.
