The Effect of Corncob-Active Carbon Adsorbent Mass on Methane and Carbon Dioxide Content on Biogas Purification

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

The use of biogas is now starting to be considered as the fuel of choice. However, the concentration of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in biogas is very low. Therefore, biogas requires treatment to reduce the carbon dioxide content so that the CH4 concentration increases, by carrying out biogas purification. The research, the use of adsorbents from corncob waste containing lignocellulose as activated carbon has the potential to reduce CO2 levels. Samples from biogas purification were tested by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) to determine the CO2 and CH4 content of biogas. The 23-factorial design analysis was used to determine the variables including the adsorbent mass, biogas flow rate, and time during purification that affects the CO2 and CH4 concentrations of biogas purification. The results showed that increasing the mass of corncob-activated carbon as an adsorbent decreased the CO2 concentration of biogas and increased the CH4 ratio of biogas from biogas purification.
