Terebang: Islamic musical genre and strengthening local Sundanese ethnic identity

Rooted in the local Sundanese ethnicity and grounded in Islamic principles, this article aims to explore the genealogy of Islamic Sundanese music (frame-drum), terebang sejak, terebang gebes-beluk, local activists, and the resonance of Sundanese Islamic music in rural areas and traditional identities in urban areas. We use ‘performance ethnomusicology’ as a methodological framework. This research finds a unique fact: the local music genre evolved from the idea of village Islamic ritual vernacular to modernity on the urban stage. This study contributes to the important aspects of vernacular ethnomusicology expressed in domestic social practices that evolve towards the stage of modernity.
