Abstract
Malaria is a disease caused by the infection of the genus Plasmodium protozoa that attack erythrocytes. Stem extract can reduce anemia by reducing erythrocyte cell haemolysis. Earthworms have the lumbrokinase enzyme which can hydrolyze plasminogen-rich fibrin clots. Brotowali extract and earthworm extract in Balb/C mice infected with Plasmodium berghei against haematocrit values and histopathological assessment of the spleen. This research was conducted with an experimental RAL model. The experimental animals used were 25 female mice Balb/C, 8 weeks of age with a bodyweight of ±20 grams. The groups of mice were determined namely: (P0) negative control, (P1) positive control infected without therapy, (P2) infected and treated with brotowali stem extract 400 mg/kg b. wt. (P3) infected and treated with earthworm extract 250 mg/kg b.wt. and (P4) infected and treated with a combination of 400 mg/kg b.wt. brotowali extract and 250 mg/kg b. wt. earthworm extract, treated for 7 days infected with Plasmodium berghei by Intraperitoneal 1x107 concentration. Data analysis of haematocrit values was analyzed through One-Way ANOVA statistical test and responded by the Tukey test (P<0.05). Preparation of splenic histopathology was done through hematoxylin-eosin staining and was analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the haematocrit value of mice infected with Plasmodium berghei given with extracts of brotowali stems and earthworms had no significant difference (P>0.05). Histopathological features of the treatment group organs (P2), (P3), and (P4) increase the improvement by marked reduction in hyperemia and hemosiderin distribution in the splenic parenchyma. This study concludes that the treatment given is not improved the haematocrit value but it is an improvement in splenic organ histopathology.
