Sansevieria trifasciatas, xerophyte as indoor humidity absorber of small type residences

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The research took place in Malang, Province of East Java, Indonesia where the climate character is hot and humid. The research issue was higher humidity level in expanded small type residences, which will affect their inhabitants' thermal comfort. It occurs because room developing in small type residence decrease percentage of open - green space which is applied to their lots that causes lack of light and air flow intensity that enter inside the houses. Lighting and cross ventilation system goes uneffective. Bioclimatic architecture paradigm involves plants to resolve micro climate issue in buildings. The research method employed morphology observation, stomata density measurement, and wet weight measurement of Sansevieria trifasciatas in glass boxes. The result of the research showed that stomata density level was low. Difference wet weight measurement of the plants showed that there was weight increasing on the plants when they situated in the drier growing media inside glass boxes. The availability of Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis model in the plants allows them to absorb humidity in rooms. The conclusion is Sansevieria trifasciatas can be feasibly applied to absorb humidity in the small type residences.
