title = "Oxidative Sintering of UO2 Pellets Using CO2 Atmosphere",
abstract = "The sintering of UO2 pellets has been conducted at temperatures 10000C and 11000C in a CO2 atmosphere (oxidative sintering). The used of CO2 as reducing atmosphere is intended to provide an atmosphere which can accelerate sintering process compared to conventional reductive sintering of UO2 green pellets conducted at 1700oC in N2-H2 atmosphere. UO2 pellets were fabricated through cold compaction of UO2 powder feedstock with a variety of its O/U ratio. The green pellets then sintered at 1000oC and 1100oC for 2hours in CO2 atmosphere (oxidative sintering) and at 1700oC for 3hours in N2-H2 atmosphere (reductive sintering). The characterization of green and sintered pellets in the term of geometric density by measuring the diameter, height and weight of the pellet. The results show that the densification in CO2 atmosphere (oxidative sintering) of hyper-stoichiometric UO2 pellet nearly completed at 600°C lower than that in reductive sintering with the shorter sintering time. In the oxidative sintering, a higher O/U ratio of UO2 powder feedstock will increase the densification. This trend is not observed in reductive sintering of UO2 pellets due to the reduction of UO2+x (decreasing in O/U ratio) occurs before densification stage.",
