N2 - Biomass as a renewable material became a prospective precursor for the development of alternative energy. It contains cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The decomposition of lignin gives phenolic derivatives, which represent a major fraction of bio-oil after catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) treating. Here, an attempt to get hydrocarbon based-fuel from HDO of phenol is reported by using 10% and 15% Ni loading on Al2O3-ZrO2. The catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation method and characterized completely. Gas Chromatography analysis of HDO products showed that reaction using 10% Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2 at 350°C gave n-hexane selectively. On the other hand, reaction using 15% Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2 at 350°C gave n-hexane (58.93%), 3-methylpentane (9.48%), and methylcyclopentane (19.76%). A further reaction using 15% Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2 at 200°C gave n-hexane (48.93%), 3-methylpentane (22.82%), and methylcyclopentane (12.11%). This result explained that Ni loading influenced the product selectivity. The lower Ni content increases the selectivity into n-hexane. However, total conversion of the product is affected by the higher Ni loading.
