Influence of chloride immersion in wet and dry cycles on the mechanical behavior of recycled aggregate concrete

Abstract

One of the most significant elements affecting the structure's durability is chloride assault on concrete. The wet and dry cycle causes the greatest risk of structural damage due to chloride ion penetration. Nowadays, it is common practice to employ recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) instead of natural concrete aggregates (NCA), which helps to reduce the buildup of concrete waste. This research aims to determine the impact of chloride on the mechanical characteristics of recycled aggregate concrete. The samples will be immersed in 4% NaCl solution in wet & dry cycles with a ratio of 1:1 for 1, 3, and 5 months. The result of compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of NAC and RAC test after the immersion of 4% NaCl solution with wet & dry cycles increased with increasing age of concrete and the value was greater compared to the condition before the immersion (0 months). Therefore, it can be concluded that the immersion of concrete specimens using wet & dry cycles for 5 months doesn't affect significantly concrete mechanical behavior.
