Dominant Supporting Factors and Barriers to BIM Implementation in Large Scale Contractors in East Java

Research output: Contribution to journal › Conference article › peer-review

Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions of large contractors in East Java regarding the dominant supporting factors and barriers implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in construction projects. Given the mandatory adoption of BIM in Indonesia for certain state-owned buildings, this research aims to identify supporting and inhibiting factors influencing its implementation. Data was collected through questionnaires distributed to 33 large contractor companies in East Java, with 30 successful responses. The Relative Importance Index (RII) method was utilized for analysis, employing a 5-point Likert scale to rate factors. The results indicate that technology is the most significant supporting factor, enabling early error detection, centralized information, and enhanced visualization. Innovation, organization, and policy also emerged as crucial supporting elements, improving project efficiency, decision-making, and fostering training initiatives. Conversely, financial considerations, primarily high software and hardware costs, and low market demand, are the foremost inhibiting factors. Policy gaps, such as the absence of clear company policies and insufficient government support, along with technological challenges like software incompatibility and data exchange difficulties, also significantly impede BIM adoption. This research provides valuable insights into the multifaceted landscape of BIM implementation in Indonesia's construction sector.
