Abstract

Protective materials are used in diagnostic radiology to reduce radiation exposure. This investigation aims to study the attenuation coefficient and optical transmission of bismuth oxide-polyester resin composite made by open molding technique with varying concentrations of bismuth oxide. This research polyester resin and methyl ethyl ketone peroxide. Four samples were synthesized with different concentrations of bismuth oxide (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5) %. Samples were characterized using X-ray and optical emission spectroscopy. The results showed that the coefficient of attenuation increased with increasing bismuth oxide concentration. The half-value layer decreases with increasing bismuth oxide concentration. Bismuth oxide-polyester-resin composites can scatter visible light. These results demonstrate the potential of the resulting composite material as a lead-free material for X-ray shielding.
