Abstract
This paper describes the benefit of using a Static VAR Compensator (SVC) to adjust and stabilize the output voltage of a 3-phase self-excitation induction generator (SEIG) under variable loading. The considered SVC model to excite the induction generator includes the use of TSC (thyristor-switched capacitor) and TCR (thyristor-controlled reactor). The TSC comprising a capacitor and thyristors in antiparallel connection is used to compensate the reactive power requirement and can be activated without triggering the angle control. The TCR consists of an inductor, a resistor, and thyristors in antiparallel connection, and it can be activated using the triggering angle control of 90°-180° related to the fact that the current phase in an inductor lags behind the voltage phase by 90°. The observation results show that the higher the generator speed, the higher the generated voltage and frequency are. The rotation speed variation of 1250-1450 rpm produced the output voltage range of 141-249 volts and the frequency range of 40-48.6 Hz. The voltage drops with the increase of loading. An initial voltage of 235 volts at 1400 rpm dropped to 132.3 volts when being loaded with an incandescent lamp of 120 watts. It was shown that SVC could be used to maintain the output of the induction generator at 220 volts. Based on the load variation values considered during the observation, it was shown that the system could reach back and maintain the voltage value at 220V in 5, 5.5, 11.8, 10.9 seconds respectively for the load values of 30W, 45W, 90W, and 105W.
