Abstract

– The area of mangrove forest in Damas Beach is decreasing as a result of the conversion of mangrove land to plantation. The purpose of this study is to analyze the benefits and costs of mangrove forests for the community and analyze the plantation business of mangrove land that has changed function. The decline of area and species of mangrove is caused by the opening of coconut plantation and agriculture land, which is done by PHBM group (Joint Forest Management Society). The existence of the conversion of mangrove forest land into plantation area creates conflicts within the land use. Economically, mangrove forests still have economic value that can be enjoyed by the surrounding community. The value of direct use can be identified from the catch of mangrove crab. The value of indirect use of mangrove forests can be calculated based on biological functions, intrusion protection and coastal protection. The value of mangrove forest from 3.6 ha land directly from the fishing activity of crab and fish and the value of sedimentation dredging. The ownership of this mangrove land is enjoyed by the general public. While the value of coconut crops in the area of 3.6 ha mangrove lands that has been switched functions only enjoyed by individuals. In the long term benefit of mangrove forests are more profitable than the coconut plantations. From the research results it is suggested to explore local rulemaking in the form of Village Rules that regulate mangrove forest management for the community so that mangrove logging can be reduced.
