CA125 Level and the Presence of Ascites as the Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy Consideration for Advanced Ovarian Carcinoma

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

The shallow survival rate in patients with advanced stages ovarian carcinoma requires early diagnosis to improve treatment results. The aim of this study is to compare serum CA 125 levels (obtained from laboratory results) with the presence of ascites on ultrasound in patients with advanced epithelial ovarian carcinoma for consideration of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy (NACT). This retrospective analytic observational study involved 106 samples from the last live years of carcinoma ovarian patients at the dr. Saiful Anwar Hospital in Malang Indonesia. The comparison of CA125 levels between ascites patients and patients without ascites, using the Mann-Whitney test, results in a p-value of 0.125. This finding shows no significant difference in CA125 levels between ascites patients and patients without ascites. This study indicates that the CA 125 level and presence of ascites can't be used in predicting the stage of Epithelial Ovarian Carcinoma. We believe that the level of CA 125 and the presence of ascites are not independent factors for diagnosing malignancy. Thus, the variables should not be considered for neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
