Big five personality traits as predictors of motorcycle riding performance simulation in Indonesia

Motorcycle accidents are one of the main focuses of road safety research. Several previous studies have shown that the rider's personality factors affect his behavior on the road. This study aims to describe the demographic of motorcycle riders in Malang City and to analyze the relationship between the personality of motorcyclists and their riding performance. The Big Five (BF) inventory questionnaire and the Honda Riding Trainer (HRT) simulator were used as measuring tools. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). This descriptive analysis with 293 respondents has revealed that riders are dominated by males (83%), 54% of the riders ride automatic motorbikes, and the average age of the riders is 24 years old. Most of the respondents (71%) have ridden a motorcycle before 17 years old, and only 32% of respondents have never been involved in an accident. Most riders have an agreeableness personality (46%) and have riding performance in category B (46%). Meanwhile, 57% of the riders have been involved in an accident during the simulation. The SEM analysis has revealed that the personality dimensions of motorcyclists significantly correlated with riding performance are neuroticism and agreeableness. The age of starting riding is a quasi-moderating variable acting not only as a moderator with a negative value on openness and a positive value on agreeableness but also as a predictor of riding performance. Overall, the relationship between the rider's personality, riding performance, and external factors as moderating variables is moderate as illustrated in the SEM analysis.
