Behavioral analysis on intercity bus terminal - a case study of Probolinggo City, Indonesia

In Indonesia, intercity bus terminals play an important role to serve transfer passengers. The fact that bus terminal relocation caused more inconvenience to intercity passenger suggests the need to study the behavior of intercity bus passenger. This study reveals that the intercity bus boarding place choice model was reasonably successful in providing an understanding of the determinant factors of boarding place choice. It was also found that major policy variables affecting the use of boarding place are in-vehicle access time, out of vehicle time and difference in intercity bus distance. Shorter distance passenger was found to have higher sensitivity to in-vehicle access time and difference in intercity bus distance than their counterpart. There are three policy implications resulted from this research, these are: (1) improving access, (2) segmenting service based on intercity distance, and (3) providing multiple bus stops. In line with the increasing significance of informal boarding place problem, this study has contributed in giving more understanding of intercity bus passenger behavior in Indonesia and other developing countries that may face the same problem.
