A study of oxide effect in cutting tools, toward the cutting tools wear on cast iron turning

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

In general, insert tools are used for cutting materials such as steel, aluminum etc. Carbide is a kind of cutting tool used for cutting materials such as gray cast iron. The cast iron abrasion factor would often be the caused of a rapid tool worn out and the cutting tool become blunt and of course would resulted a low cutting quality. Generally, the heat arising during the cutting process will reduce lathe cutting tool quality. The use of lubrication on cast iron cutting is sometime useless. Tool wear out could be reduce by improving the elements that forming the secondary hardening. Carbide compounds are usually used to improve the secondary hardening tool inserts. In this research on dry turning cast iron FC-150 by applying a cutting tool inserts where the cutting tool insert hardening occurs on the oxides element as a secondary hardening. Explicitly, on the using Cr2O3 + TiO2, Al2O3 + TiO2, SiO2 + TiO2 as the insert tool and the cutting tool reaching 750° C each cutting process could remove chips in a time rate of 173.83, 169.76, 185.08 cm3/min.
