A New Species of Leaf-Nosed Aphaniotis (Squamata: Agamidae) from Sumatra, Indonesia

We describe a new species of Aphaniotis from Aceh Province, Sumatra, Indonesia. The new species bears a leaf-like rostral appendage and is most similar to A. ornata, a species endemic to Borneo. Unlike A. ornata, the new species has 8-12 scale rows counted from the base of the projection to its distal tip, 75-87 combined gulars and ventrals from the mental to anterior lip of the cloaca, and heavily keeled to prismatic parietal scales without a visible parietal eye. Unlike some other agamids with rostral appendages, morphology of the new species seems to be only slightly influenced by sexual selection and more heavily constrained by natural selection for crypsis.
